A Taste of Tradition from Laingsburg

In the heart of the Western Cape province of South Africa lies a quaint town, Laingsburg, known for its rugged beauty, warm hospitality, and a culinary gem that has been delighting locals and visitors alike for generations – Aunt Poppie’s Roosterkoeke.

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting Laingsburg, you’ll know that no trip is complete without indulging in these delectable treats. But what exactly are roosterkoeke, and why are Aunt Poppie’s so special?

Roosterkoeke, quite simply put, are a type of South African bread that’s cooked over an open flame. The result is a golden, crispy exterior with a soft, fluffy interior. They’re reminiscent of a cross between a scone and a bread roll, but with a unique smoky flavor that can only come from being cooked over coals.

Aunt Poppie, whose real name is Gertruida van der Merwe, is a beloved figure in Laingsburg. Her roosterkoeke have become legendary, not just for their taste but for the stories and memories they evoke.

The ingredients are simple

A visit to Aunt Poppie’s humble kitchen next to the main road, is an experience in itself. Nestled in the heart of town, her kitchen is a cozy haven filled with the aroma of freshly baked bread and the sound of laughter and conversation. As you step inside, you’re greeted by Aunt Poppie herself, a warm smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. She’s been making roosterkoeke for as long as anyone can remember, using a recipe passed down through generations.

The ingredients are simple – flour, water, salt, and yeast – but it’s the way Aunt Poppie combines them with her expert hands that makes all the difference. She kneads the dough with a gentle touch, infusing it with love and care.

Once the dough has risen to her satisfaction, Aunt Poppie shapes it into small rounds and places them on a grill suspended over hot coals. As the roosterkoeke cook, they puff up and take on a beautiful golden hue, filling the air with an irresistible aroma.

First bite is pure bliss

Finally, when they’re cooked to perfection, Aunt Poppie serves them piping hot, slathered with butter and jam. The first bite is pure bliss – crispy on the outside, soft and pillowy on the inside, with a hint of smokiness that lingers on the palate.

So, if you ever find yourself in Laingsburg, be sure to seek out Aunt Poppie’s kitchen. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a curious newcomer, her roosterkoeke will warm your heart and leave you craving more.

Kroonland 4×4 Trail – end of 2023 Adventure.

I was fortunate enough to embark on various incredible journeys around the world this year, many of which were linked to my role at Embrace South Africa Tours. In addition, my wife and I were privileged to spend time with our daughters in London and Pittsburgh during April and May of 2023.

Having recently revamped this blog, I’m eager to share insights into enchanting destinations such as Nairobi, Maasai Mara, and various locations in South Africa, including the captivating Pilanesberg, in upcoming posts.

However, I believe it’s only fitting to kick off this series with a reflection on the final journey of 2023 – a memorable day-long 4×4 adventure with my son, Eduan.

Eduan discovered the beautiful (not too difficult!) 4×4 Trail at Kroonland, just outsise Villiersdorp and not too far from our home.

Kroonland 4×4 Route is situated on the farm Kaaimansgat, approximately 10 km from Villiersdorp. The circular trail, of 15km, takes 2-3 hours and traverses the mountains overlooking the town, the Theewaterskloof Dam and the numerous apple, peach and pear orchards in the valley below. The campsite is situated on the bank of a perennial water stream.

Driving through the bush is really beautiful. It’s not just about the changing scenery but also the peaceful alone time it gives you. When you’re in the 4×4, going through the wild, it feels calm and quiet. You’re kind of on your own, getting to be close to nature. You hear leaves rustling, animals in the distance, and the steady sound of the engine—it all comes together like a peaceful melody.

Embarking on a 4×4 trip introduces a captivating dance between man and machine, where the rugged terrain becomes both adversary and ally. The dynamics of such a journey unfold in the harmonious synergy between the driver and the vehicle, as they navigate challenging landscapes with precision and skill.

Our pride and joy, our vehicles – Mitsubishi Pajero Sports.

“Embarking on a 4×4 trail is not just a journey through landscapes; it’s a dance with the untamed, a symphony of wheels on rugged paths, where every twist and turn writes a melody of adventure on the canvas of the wild.”
